*FOR TEACHERS* USEFUL EXPRESSIONS & FOOD VOCABULARY

This lesson is a follow -up to ALPHABET AND LIKES & DISLIKES - DO YOU LIKE BROCCOLI ICE CREAM? The goal of this lesson is to keep practicing the alphabet and the question "Do you like...?" as well as the short answers "Yes, I do." and "No, I don't." There is more food vocabulary as well as a focus on the useful expressions "How do you say ...?" and "What's the meaning of ...?"

I prepared the material for this class based on the food flashcards from ESL-kids.

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): DO YOU LIKE BROCCOLI ICE CREAM REVIEW

Use the flashcards and prompt students to ask each other "Do you like...?" The students who answer can use the "Yes, I do." and "No, I don't." sticks while saying their answer.

ACTIVITY 2 - HANGMAN (10')

Have students choose food items from the "Do you like broccoli ice cream" flashcard set and trace each letter space on the paper. Then have them use the alphabet flashcards to play hangman.

(Alternatively, if you don't think your students need to review vocabulary from last class, you may play this game in the end of the lesson with the new vocabulary)

ACTIVITY 3 - USEFUL EXPRESSIONS (10')

Have students do exercises 1 and 2 in the "Useful Expressions" worksheet to focus on the sentences "What's the meaning of ...?" and "How do you say ...?". In exercise 2, tell students they can ask each other what letter is missing, in which case they have to say the letter in English as an answer. Tell them you want to see how fast the whole group finishes as to motivate them to help each other. This exercise will help prepare the students for the next game as well as review the spelling of vocabulary from previous classes.

ACTIVITY 4 - FOOD BOARDING GAME (20')

To prepare for the game, have students check the items they like in the What do you like? worksheet.

Use the food flashcards and a board game, which you can prepare yourself in many ways. Check out Pinterest for some printable templates. Students are supposed to roll the dice to know how many spaces they can move forward. Then they must pick a card and a friend to ask "Do you like + food on the card?" If the friend says "Yes, I do." the students can move the number shown on the dice. If the student answers "No, I don't." they can't move forward. If the student doesn't know the name of the food in English, he or she has to ask "How do you say ...?". When a student is supposed to answer, if he or she doesn't know what that food is, prompt them to ask "What's the meaning of ...?". Motivate all students to help their friends with vocabulary.

ACTIVITY 5 - WHICH ONE DID I TAKE OUT (5')

Use the food flashcards to review the food vocabulary. Place three flash cards on the floor and have students name them. Have them face down and shuffle. Then ask students to close their eyes. Remove one card and ask them to guess what it was.
