*FOR TEACHERS* CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION FOR ARTS, FOOD VOCABULARY, I LIKE vs. I DON'T LIKE & ME TOO

This 1h15' lesson was prepared to finish "Unit 3 - The Pet Show" and start "Unit 4 - Lunchtime" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted the activities from the collection to work on the following:
  • Animal vocabulary review: spider, rat, lizard, cat, elephant, dog, duck, frog, snake, crocodile, tiger, butterfly and giraffe
  • Classroom instructions: draw, color & cut
  • Introduce food vocabulary: banana, cake, cheese sandwich, apple, pizza, sausage, chicken, steak, peas & carrots
  • I like vs. I don't like
  • Me too
To introduce the food vocabulary I used the flashcards by ELS-Kids.

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (20') - MAKE AN ANIMAL MASK

Here's the material you will need: paper plates, pencils, scissors, markers, a hole punch and an elastic. You'll need you to put the paper plates on the students' face and mark where their eyes are. You can have them do it in pairs if you think it's possible. Have them draw small circles where the eyes are going to be and cut them off. Have students draw and color the rest of the animal's face. Then make two holes on each side of the mask and help students tie the elastic to the two sides.

Depending of the of your students, they can have more or less autonomy in this activity. Remember it's a nice opportunity to practice some instructions in English, such as "draw", "color", and "cut".

ACTIVITY 2 - QUIZ (10')

There is a quiz at the end of unit 3 on Super Mind's SB, which work as nice review of the units 1, 2 &3. IT's a very short quiz. You can have students do it by themselves first and then divide the class into two groups. As you call out a student and they say the right answer, the whole group gets a point.

ACTIVITY 3- INTRODUCE FOOD VOCABULARY (20')

You can have students stay in their groups in order to introduce food vocabulary. Get a food flashcard, and show it the classroom. Have students raise their hands if they know how to say the word for the food in English. If they get it right, you can ask someone from their groups to spell it.Then the whole group gets a point again.

In order to practice the new vocabulary, you can play the game "Spinning" from the students' DVD-ROM.

ACTIVITY 4- I LIKE, I DON'T LIKE (20')

Ask students to tell a friend next to them 3 things they like to eat and 3 things they don't like to eat using the structures "I like ..." and "I don't like...". Then have Students listen to the song and follow it on SB page 46 as to compare the things they like to eat and the things about the songs.

After the song is over you can read the positive statements and ask Ss who also like that food. Prompt students to say "Me too." Then get one food flashcard and ask a student who likes it to say "I like ...". Prompt Ss who also like it to say "Me too."

ACTIVITY 5- ASSIGN HOMEWORK (5')
