*FOR TEACHERS* ANIMALS, PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE, SHORT SOUNDS I AND CAMOUFLAGE

This 1h15' lesson was prepared to work on "Unit 3 - The Pet Show" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised a PowerPoint presentation to work on the following:
  • Animal vocabulary: spider, rat, lizard, cat, elephant, dog, duck, frog, snake, crocodile, tiger, butterfly and giraffe
  • Short sounds I
  • Story: review animals & prepositions of place
  • Review "it is" vs. "they are" and colors

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): ANIMALS MEMORY GAME

Print two sets of animal flashcards by ELS-Kids. Place the cards facing down and play the animals memory game. As a way to have more fun, have students imitate the animals every time they find a pair of cards.

ACTIVITY 2 -  (15'): DO YOU LIKE DOGS?

Show Ss the animal flashcards and ask them "Do you like ...?" Have them answer with the thumbs up or down while saying "Yes, I do." and "No, I don't." You can also use the sticks from this lesson by Super Simple Learning. Once you're done, have Ss work in pairs ans ask each other the question "Do you like ...?" while the other answers "No, I don't." or "Yes, I do."

Work on exercise 2 on Students' Book page 37 to reinforce the language while working on listening skills.

ACTIVITY 3 -  (10'): I DON'T LIKE SPIDERS

Work on the story on Student's book page 38 with the Students' DVD-ROM. Then work on exercise 1 on SB page 39.

ACTIVITY 4 -  (10'): SHORT I SOUND

Write the sentence "This is Tim and his sister silly Kim" on the board without all the "i's" (Th_s _s T_m and h_s s_lly s_ster K_m) and have students guess what letter is missing. Then challenge them to say the sentence really fast.

Have students come up with other words that have the short "i" sound and try to spell them.

ACTIVITY 5 -  (15'): SUPER CHALLENGE

Have Students do exercises on page 40 & 41 as a challenge test. You can set scores for each exercise with the students as you go over them.

ACTIVITY 6 -  (15'): CAMOUFLAGE

Before talking about camouflage, talk a little about the color of the animals. In order to do it and also practice "it is" X "they are" work on the PowerPoint presentation below.

When you are done with the presentation go over Students' book 42 & 43. Make sure you have students use the language suggested to talk about camouflage, such as "There is a + animal" and "The tiger hides in tall grass".

ASSIGN HOMEWORK (5')
