*FOR TEACHERS" CHUNKS OF SENTENCES & CLASSROOM ITEMS REVIEW - FRIENDS SUPER POWERS

This 1h15' lesson is a transition between the unit "Friends" and "Unit 1- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I used the collection student's book, workbook and class audio CD as well as classroom flashcards by esl-kids.com in addition to a board game and a worksheet I devised. Here is what this lesson focuses on:
  • Reading skills - sequencing the story
  • Saying some basic chunk of sentences such as "My turn!"
  • Reviewing classroom vocabulary
  • Grammar: What's this? / Is it a/an ...? / Yes, it is. / No, it isn't.

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): REMEMBER THE SUPER FRIENDS

Review the names of the characters of Super Minds through the exercise on WB page 4. Alternatively, use the Flashcards.

ACTIVITY 2 - STORY SEQUENCE & SENTENCE CHUNKS(20')

The story on Super Minds SB page 8 introduces the super friends' powers. To work on that, put each picture of the story on the table and have students sequence them as they listen to the story from the class audio CD. Then work on exercise 2 on SB page 9 and exercise 2 on WB page 8 as to bring focus to the chunks:
  • Look at me!
  • My turn!
  • Listen to me!
  • I can make fire.
  • I can run fast.
  • I can disappear.
  • I can speak to animals.
To reinforce the language, play a board game where students have to toss the dice as to move forward, then say the sentence that corresponds to the picture they moved to. Whoever gets to the end first, wins. Click to get the board game template:

ACTIVITY 3 - CLASSROOM ITEMS REVIEW (10')

This first unit of Super Minds starts by presenting the following vocabulary:

  • Pen
  • Eraser
  • Pencil
  • Book
  • Notebook
  • Bag
  • Ruler
  • Desk
  • Pencil case
There is a song for students to chant with the vocabulary above on the SB page 10. I'm going to have students close their books, spread the items in the vocabulary list above around the classroom, and ask students to grab the items as they hear the word in the audio. In the end I'm going to ask students what they have in their hands as to make sure they remember the words. To have a smooth transition to this activity, tell students you want to see who can run fast.

ACTIVITY 4 - WHICH ONE DID I TAKE OUT (10')

Choose from classroom flashcards to review the vocabulary from previous activity and even expand the students' vocabulary if appropriate. Place three flash cards on the floor and have students name them. Have them face down and shuffle. Then ask students to close their eyes. Remove one card and ask them to guess which card you took out.

ACTIVITY 5 - GRAMMAR FOCUS - WHAT'S IN MY BAG? (10')

Let students listen to the audio and do exercise 1 on page 11 of SB. Then bring their attention to the grammar focus with the Classroom items - what's this worksheet. Access it through the link below:

Have students do the exercises on their own and check with their peers. When everyone is done, check it with the classroom working on pronunciation.

ACTIVITY 6 - CD ROM GAMES (10')

To finish this lesson, there are two games in the students' DVD ROM that focus on classroom vocabulary as well as the sentences "What's this?" and "It's a/an ...": Spinning and Catching clouds.
