"FOR TEACHERS* FAVORITE TOYS & STORY VALUE

This 1h15' lesson was prepared to work on "Unit 2- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised a worksheet to work on the following:
  • Review toy vocabulary
  • The structure: "My favorite toy is /isn't"
  • Review short answers and questions with verb TO BE
  • Store value: It's not okay to cheat!
  • Story language: "Help!" / "Just a minute!" / "Wait!"

During this lesson, you can use the collection flashcards or the toy flashcards by ESL-kids mentioned below.

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): TOYS

Review the structure "It's a + toy" and toy vocabulary by showing them the toy flashcards. Ask Ss what their favorite toy is and elicit the sentence "My favorite toy is +toy". Write a list of favorite toys for the next activity.

Play the song on SB page 24 and have Students do exercise 2.

ACTIVITY 2 - FAVORITE TOYS (10')

Have students' guess each other's favorite toys the following way: they pick up a number of toy flashcards, then walk around the classroom and show another student the flashcard of what they think the other student's favorite toy is. The other student is supposed to say "My favorite toy is / isn't a + toy." If they guessed correctly they can give the flashcard to the other student. Whoever gets rids of all flashcards first wins the game.

ACTIVITY 3 - DESCRIBING TOYS (20')

Do exercise 1 on Student's book page 25. Then have students close their books and do the exercises on the Worksheet below to reinforce the grammar structure "adj + noun" besides working on adjectives:

Elicit 3 adjectives from the class and write them on the board. Then show students a toy flashcards and elicit the description from them.

Do the exercises on WB page 25.

ACTIVITY 4 - WHAT AM I DRAWING (10')

Divide Ss in pairs. Have one student draw a toy while the other student guesses what it is by asking " Is it a / an ...?" Elicit the answer "Yes, it is." / "No, it isn't." After they guess the toy, they can guess the characteristics by saying "Is it + adjective?". Again, elicit the answer "Yes, it is." and "No, it isn't".

ACTIVITY 5 - IT'S NOT OKAY TO CHEAT (20')

Have students go to WB page 26. Then play the story and have them sequence it to do the exercise. Show the pictures on page 27 and have them try to figure out how they are related to the story. Have them come up with a moral such as "It's not okay to cheat."

Use the DVD-ROM to work on the language of the story. To reinforce the language from the story, have Students give examples of situations where they can say "Help!", "Just a minute!" and "Congratulations!". Then work on the PowerPoint Presentation below:
