*FOR TEACHERS* ANIMALS, PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE & A/AN x NOTHING

This 1h15' lesson was prepared to work on "Unit 3 - The Pet Show" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection ans also devised a board game to work on the following:
  • Animal vocabulary: spider, rat, lizard, cat, elephant, dog, duck, frog.
  • Prepositions of place: in, on & under
  • A/AN x NOTHING

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (15'): WHAT ANIMAL IS IT?

Show Ss the animal flashcards. Then pick one card randomly and describe the animals. Use this opportunity to review some language, such as "big", "small", "beautiful", "ugly" as well as colors. You can also introduce other vocabulary, such as "fierce", dangerous" and "wild". After describing the animals to the group and having them guess what animal card you have, encourage students to work the same way in pairs. Make sure they use language appropriately and practice the structures of verb TO Be they already know, such as "It's...", "Is it (a/an) ...?", and "Yes, it is."/"No, it isn't."

You can work on the game Spinning on the student's DVD-ROM to practice the animal vocabulary a bit more if needed.

ACTIVITY 2 - THE PET SHOW (10')

Ask Ss if they have a pet and what it is. You can make a list of all the pets in the classroom. Tell Ss the Super Friends and their classmates are having a Pet Show at school, but the pets they have are quite unusual. Give them the name of all the classmates, then play the song from exercise 1 on SB page 34 and have students complete the list with the pets they have.

ACTIVITY 3 - WHERE ARE THE ANIMALS (25')

Tell Students that Sandra's frog is missing and they have to guess where it is. Work on exercise 1 from SB page 35, having students listen, read and stick the frog on each picture. Make sure Ss understand the meaning of "in", "on", and "under".

Show Ss the picture below. Tell them there are many tigers hidden and ask them to tell you where the tigers are. Make sure they use appropriate prepositions and give them language as needed. You can make them use the structure "There is one tiger (on the tree)".

Work on exercise 3 on SB page 35 as to reinforce the language. You can give Students some time to work in pairs. Have one students pick a number randomly without looking at the book. As the other describes the picture by saying "The cat is on the book.", for example, the other student has to guess whether that is true or not.

You can also work on the game Catching clouds on the student's DVD-ROM to reinforce the new language.

ACTIVITY 4 - HOW MANY ANIMALS - A / AN x NOTHING (20')

Tell students they are going to listen to a song that shows a big mess in the Super Friends' school. You can use the DVD-ROM so that students can listen to the song and look at the image. After the song is over you can ask students "Do you remember how many elephants there are? Where are they?"

Work on exercise 1 from WB page 36 and go over the usage of A / AN x NOTHING.

Work on the board game below to practice using A and AN when appropriate as well reinforce prepositions.
