*FOR TEACHERS* TOYS, POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS (HIS/HER) & ABOUT FRIENDS

This 1h15' lesson was prepared to introduce "Unit 2- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised one PowerPoint Presentation, a worksheet and a dominoes set of card to work of the following:
  • Toys
  • The possessive pronouns "his" and "her"
  • About friends: "What's his/her name?" / " How old is he/she?" / "What's his/her" favorite toy?"
During this lesson, you can use the collection flashcards or the toy flashcards by ESL-kids mentioned below.

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (15'):TOYS

Give students some time to look at the toys on page 22 of the student's book. Ask them what toys they like and what their favorite one is. Then ask them to close their books. Show them each toy flashcard and ask "What's this?" Elicit their answers making sure they use the structure "It's a + toy". Use this activity to access how much vocabulary students already have.

Play the game spinning on student's CD-ROM so that they can practice the new vocabulary while associating the written form of the words.

ACTIVITY 2 -LISTENING SKILLS (10')

Place all toy flashcards on the table. Tell students they will listen to a song and when they hear the name of a toy they have to touch it. Play the song on SB page 22 to do this activity.

Do the listening activity on WB page 22; Students listen to the toy names, find them and number them.

ACTIVITY 3 -IT'S HER DOLL (10')

Work on the PowerPoint presentation below to introduce and practice "his" and "her" with the structures "It's hi/her + toy."

ACTIVITY 4 - WHAT'S HIS NAME? (20')

Work on SB p 23. exercise 1. Students do the listening activity and then stick the correct sticker under the children's name. In order to practice the structures of this activity do the exercises in the WS below. The structures are "What's his/her name?" / " How old is he/she?" / "What's his/her" favorite toy?". Students are supposed to complete the questions according to the answer.

Have students work in pairs asking and answering the questions in the WS. One student can look at the worksheet and ask the questions. The other student is supposed to answer without looking. The student who asked the questions can check their partner's answers.

ACTIVITY 5 - TOY DOMINOES (10')

Allow the last minutes of the class for students to play dominoes. Instead of matching numbers students have to match the written form of the toy name and the toy. Click below, print and cut out.
