*FOR TEACHERS* CLASSROOM ITEMS & BE (SHORT ANSWERS, SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS & STATEMENTS) - WHAT'S THIS?

This 1h15' lesson is a reinforcement of  the grammar focus of "Unit 1- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. As a warm-up, I used some exercises from the collection workbook. For the other activities of this lesson I devised a PowerPoint Presentation, some cut-outs for a memory game and a homework worksheet. Here is what this lesson focuses on:

  • Reviewing classroom vocabulary
  • Grammar: Is it a/an ...? - Yes, it is. / No, it isn't. / It is a/an ...

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): CLASSROOM ITEMS VOCABULARY REVIEW

Do exercises on WB page 11 as to review classroom items vocabulary. The second exercise focuses on the structure "What's this? Is it a/an ...?" and "Yes, it is. / No, it isn't."

ACTIVITY 2 - YES, IT IS. / NO, IT ISN'T. (15')

In order to work on the pronunciation and fluency of these short answers, work on the YES OR NO? PowerPoint Presentation below:

After working on the pronunciation slide, you can divide the class into two groups. Have a student from Group 1 ask the first question and a student from Group 2 answer it saying "Yes, it is" or "No, it isn't". Group 1 has to decide whether Group 2's answer is right or wrong. Move to the next slide and this time have Groups 2 ask the question and Group 1 answer it, and so on.

ACTIVITY 3 - IS IT ...? MEMORY GAME (15')

So that students practice the question "Is it a / an + school item?" play the Is it ... memory game below:

Cut out the cards to play the IS IT... MEMORY GAME

Select one set of card that form a sentence such as "Is it a pen?" and have students put it in the correct order. Then explain to students they will play a memory game, but instead of forming pairs they are supposed to pick 4 cards at a time and form a sentence. At this point just mention that before the word "eraser" we use "a" instead of "an". Depending on the number of students, you have have them play in pairs, trios or as a big group.

ACTIVITY 4 - GUESS WHAT I HAVE IN MY BAG (15')

Place one school object in a bag and ask a student to guess what it is. Elicit the structure "Is it a/an + school object?" and write it on the board. Elicit the answer "Yes it is." or "No, it isn't" from students and write it on the board as well. Have the student ask and answer them until they guess the real object. Then tell students they will work in pairs doing the same. Each pair will get a bag, one of them puts one item inside and the other has to guess.

ACTIVITY 5 - TURN THE QUESTIONS INTO AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES (15')

You can use the same set used for the memory game for this activity. Just as you did to play the memory game, select one set of card that form a sentence such as "Is it a pen?" and have students put it in the correct order. Then ask students to turn it into an affirmative sentence. You can then show that is and the it change positions when we ask a question. Then place all the cards on the table facing down. Divide the class into two groups: one to form questions and the other to form answer. Give them five minutes to see which groups can form more sentences.
