This 1h15' lesson was prepared to work on "Unit 2- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised a PowerPoint presentation to work on the following:
- The sounds of short A and E
- Review U2 unit (vocabulary & grammar / structures) in all skills
- Review and practice the structure adjective + noun
- Shapes
ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): TONGUE TWISTER
To start this class, work on the sound of short "E" suggested by the end of unit 2. On page 27 of the WB, exercise 2 works on the difference between short A and short E. You can go over this exercise with students after checking the homework and elicit more words that have these sounds from students. Write a list on the board. Then tell students they will listen to a tongue twister and you want them to write it down. Play the soundtrack from SB page 27. Have students repeat the sentence as fast as they can.
ACTIVITY 2 - SHORT E SHORT STORY (10')
In order to work on the difference between the sounds of short A and E, I chose to work on a short story I found on the Beginner Book Short Vowel E by Progressive Phonics. The story is on pages 43 & 44. It has two pictures with 5 differences that you can have students find before reading the story with them. As the words with E and A are in red, you can read the story and have students read the words in red. Make sure they pronounce the sounds correctly and understand what the story is about.
ACTIVITY 3 - ALL SKILLS (20')
These activities will you help you assess your students' skills regarding what they learning in Unit 2. Follow the sequence of exercises: SB page 28 exercise 1, SB page 29 exercise 1 &2, and WB pages 28 & 29. You will need crayons in order to work on the activities from the WB.
ACTIVITY 4 - TANGRAM (30')
Work on the exercises of WB page 30 to introduce or review shapes. Then work on the PowerPoint presentation below about Tangrams to reinforce the shapes vocabulary as well as practice the structure "adjective + noun" while saying "I can see ..." and "... is missing."
The last slide of the PowerPoint presentation shows some of the things we can make with the tangram's shape. Print out a tangram for each child, have them cut out and glue it on a piece of paper as to make something themselves. Have them color the shapes as well. You may want to enjoy this opportunity to work on some instruction language, such as:
- Cut the shapes
- Color the shapes
- Glue the shapes on your paper
