*FOR TEACHERS" CLASSROOM ITEMS & BE REVIEW, SOUNDS OF "A" & COLORS

This 1h15' lesson is based on "Unit 1- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised two PowerPoint Presentation as to work on colors and description (color + school item). Here is what this class focuses on:

  • Grammar review: It's my ... / It isn't my ...
  • The sound of the letter "a"
  • Review of school items, basic in class expressions and the structures "What's this?", "It's a/an ..." through the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.
  • Colors

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (5'): IT'S MY ... VS. IT ISN'T MY ...

Do exercise 1 on Workbook page 12 orally. After students have matched the kids' faces to the pictures, they can say sentences such as "It's my pen" and "It isn't my eraser."

ACTIVITY 2 - TONGUE TWISTER (5')

While checking the homework from last class (WB pages 12 through 15), do exercise 1 on page 14 to work on listening skills. Also do exercise 2 on page 15 as to work on listening skills and the pronunciation of the letter "a". Student are supposed to listen and match the sentences:

  • A cat
  • A fat rat
  • A black bag
  • A black hat
Do exercise 4 on page 15 of student's book as a listening activity. Have students repeat after the recording. Encourage them to repeat faster and faster as a tongue twister. If the students are able to do it encourage them to think of other words that have the sound "a" and form new tongue twisters.

ACTIVITY 3 - TEST YOUR SCORE (10')

Tell students they are going to do a little test and we will see how much they can score before we move on to the next unit. Go through each activity with them on Student's book pages 16 & 17 and Workbook page 16 & 17 as well. All fours skills are tested here using the language and structures students have learned so far.

ACTIVITY 4 - COLORS (20')

Play the game spotlight using the student's DVD-ROM  to work on colors.

On student's book pages 18 & 19 there are some exercise related to primary and secondary colors. Go through each exercise with students making sure they say the colors in English as well as the words "mix", "make" and "light" (e.g. Mix blue and white to have light blue). Use play dough to show how the colors can change with different mixtures.

Work on the PowerPoint presentation below to reinforce the language of this activity.

ACTIVITY 5 - MEMORY GAME (20')

Show each picture on the PowerPoint Presentation below allowing students 1 minute to memorize what they see in each picture. Then move on to the next black slide and have them say everything they remember from the picture. Make sure students use the structure "There is a / an + color + object". Follow this pattern until the end of the presentation.

Then divide the class in pairs, hand each pair one picture (print them out from the PowerPoint Presentation) . Allow one student a minute to look at the picture. Then have the other student look at the picture while the other describes it.

ACTIVITY 6 - MOVE IT (10')

On Student's book page 20 there are exercises where students are supposed to listen and number the pictures and sentences that describe a silly sequence of movements. There is a suggestion for students to act it out with the teacher, then act it out with their friends changing the objects. Here is the sequence:

  • Take out your pencil case
  • Stand up
  • Put the pencil case on your head
  • Stretch
  • Turn around
  • Look down and catch it
This is a funny activity to end the class and a nice one to follow when students need a break once in a while.
