*FOR TEACHERS* BE (IT'S MY ... / IT ISN'T MY ...), IMPERATIVES & EXPRESSIONS - CLOSE YOUR BOOK, PLEASE.

This 1h15' lesson is based on "Unit 1- At school" from the book Super Minds 1. I adapted and used the activities from the collection and also devised a PowerPoint Presentation as to work on the Impertative sentences proposed. Here is what this lesson focuses on:

  • Grammar structure: It's my ... / It isn't my ...
  • Imperative: Open your ... / Close your ... / Pass me a ... / Sit at your desk
  • Introduction of the useful expressions: "Watch out", "I'm sorry - It's okay", "Here you go", "Thank you", "Come back"

ACTIVITY 1 - WARM UP (10'): SING ALONG

Listen to the song on SB page 12. You can use the students' DVD ROM so that students can also sing along and record themselves doing so.

ACTIVITY 2 - IT ISN'T MY PEN (15')

Tell students to open their books and do exercise 2 (draw lines from the school things to the correct desk). Then have them choose each of the characters and sing a different version of the song according to what they see on Joe's table. Focus on the structures "It isn't my + object" X "It is my + object".

To practice the structures, have each student pick three cards with school objects (you can either write school objects on pieces of paper or use the Is it ... memory game cards). Turn over the classroom flashcards and call out names. Students have to say "It's my + object" if they have the card or "It isn't my + object" if they don't have that card. To make it more fun you can turn this into a little competition teacher versus students pretending you're trying to call out the names that will actually have the card.

ACTIVITY 3 - IMPERATIVES: OPEN YOUR BOOK, PLEASE (20')

Do exercise 1 on SB page 13. Students will listen to the imperative sentences and complete with the school objects, then stick the pictures.

As to practice the imperatives "Open your..., please", "Close your..., please", "Pass me a..., please", and "Sit at your desk, please" as well as the answers "Here you go!" and "Okay!", work on the following PowerPoint Presentation.

From slides 2 to 5, have students repeat after the audio working on pronunciation as needed. Then divide the class into pairs. From slides 6 on, have one student of the pair say the answer, then show it to them so that they see whether they were right or wrong. The student's peer is supposed to mime the action. Repeat slides from 6 on as needed.

ACTIVITY 4 - POPPING BALLOONS (15')

Play the game "Popping Balloons" on the DVD ROM. Have students take turns to listen to the sentences from the previous activity and have to pop the clouds following the order of the sentence being said

ACTIVITY 5 - STORY (10')

Play the story on SB page 14 using the DVD ROM. Let students watch it once, then have them watch it again and pause after the following sentences to work on their meaning and pronunciation: "Watch out", "I'm sorry - It's okay", "Here you go!", "Thank you", "Come back". Then have students do the activity that follows the game, where they can choose sentences to complete the story.

ASSIGN HOMEWORK (5')

Assign WB pages 12 & 13.
